Konzert mit The Anatomy of Frank

Die Welt ist ein Dorf. Ein Dorf, in dem sich Holger aus Stuttgart und Kyle Woolard aus Charlottesville (VA) beim Airwaves in Island treffen und in Kontakt bleiben. So hatte Kyle, der Kopf von The Anatomy of Frank bei der Planung seiner Europatour schließlich auch bei Holger angeklopft. Und schließlich in der Karlsruher Waldstadt gelandet. Für so sympatische Leute, die sich schon beim email-Austausch wie Freunde anfühlen, geht mir das Herz auf.
So stand er schließlich am Spätnachmittag an unserer Straßenbahnhaltestelle und wir fielen uns um den Hals ohne uns noch recht zu erinnern, wie das alles mal begonnen hatte.... Nach den Hörproben auf bandcamp hatte ich auf ein eher fröhliches Konzert mit tanzbarer Musik gerechnet. Aber die Soloversion mit verstärkter Gitarre und etwas Hall auf der Stimme war eigentlich ziemlich introvertiert und von ihm selbst immer wieder als sad song eingeordnet...
Wirklich überdurchschnittlich beeindruckt haben mich im Konzert sein Gitarrenspiel und seine Fähigkeit, sich ganz auf sein Publikum einzulassen. Er hatte ein Textbuch vorbereitet, in dem alle die mitlesen konnten, die sich im Englischen nicht so sicher fühlen, dass sie beim hören alles verstehen. Bei seinen Ansagen flocht er all sein Deutsch ein und hatte auch extra ein deutsches Lied vorbereitet. Das gab natürlich ordentlich Lacher! Auch seine Geschichten aus Ecuador, wo er Gast bei einem gut betuchten Freund mit diversen Bodyguards war, waren sehr witzig.
Ebenso seine Elvis-Adaption (Fools Rush in), die er als Hochzeitsgeschenk für einen Freund einmal vorbereitet hatte. Bei Vancouver waren wir aufgerufen alle mitzusingen und das ging Kyle ganz professionell an: Aufstehen, lockern, üben und schließlich in zwei Gruppen den Chorus ordentlich schmettern. Ich glaube, wir waren gar nicht so schlecht... Für die anschließend geforderte Zugabe musste er selbst noch einmal sein "Gesangbuch" konsultieren und wir bekamen die Wahl zwischen zwei Songs. Leider ließ er sich auf den geforderten beide-deal nicht ein...
Aber alles in allem gingen wir ziemlich beeindruckt und irgendwie beglückt aus dem Konzert mit dem Typen mit dem offenen Herzen und offenem Blick für die Welt. Ein Erlebnis, dass ich also nur dringlich weiter empfehlen kann (Tourdaten sind unten).
The world is a village. A village in which Holger from Stuttgart and Kyle Woolard from Charlottesville (VA) meet at Airwaves in Iceland and stay in touch. It’s also how Kyle, lead singer of The Anatomy of Frank, knocks on Holger’s door planning his tour of Europe. And this information eventually ended up at my place in the Karlsruher Waldstadt. For such likeable people, who already feel like friends during an e-mail exchange, my heart opens.
Finally he was standing at our S-bahn stop late afternoon today and we hugged without really remembering how this had all started. After the song samples on bandcamp I had expected a rather upbeat concert with music to dance to. But the solo version with amped guitar and a bit of echo in the voice was actually rather introverted and by Kyle himself classified as a ‘sad song’. His guitar playing and ability to completely engage with his audience impressed me exceptionally. He had prepared a text book for all who weren’t too confident in their English, so they could understand everything while listening. Announcing the songs he tied in all the German he knew and had also specially prepared a German song. This of course caused hilarity among the crowd!
Also his stories about Ecuador, where he was the guest of quite the wealthy friend with several bodyguards, were very funny. Likewise was his Elvis adaptation (fools rush in), which he had once prepared as a wedding gift for a friend. During Vancouver we were all encouraged to sing along, which Kyle managed very professionally: standing up, easing up, practising and finally belting out the chorus in two groups. I think we weren’t even that bad… For the demanded encore he himself had to consult his ‘song book’ and we got to pick from two songs. Too bad that he didn’t agree to the deal ‘do both’. But all in all we left feeling pretty impressed and in a way joyful, from this concert with the guy with his heart and eyes open to the world. An experience I can hence only recommend with passion!
